What is A Self-Care Awareness Month

The World Health Organization announced the first self-care awareness month in 2019. The idea of this month is to encourage people to improve their level of self-care.

What is Self-Care?

The World health Organization defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”.

At we have a simple and savvy self-care definition. For us self-care is the ability to make ourselves feel better. For example: when we are having a headache, we know that drinking more water, applying warmth or relaxation can improve our state of well-being. 

Self-care includes different areas of life: physical, mental, emotional, financial and social. When we feel better, we are stronger and will perform better in all areas of life!

Why this matters: Freedom means that every day of our life we have the choice to make better decisions for ourselves. Better decisions means more self-care, more strength and thus more happiness. We are not victims of our circumstances. We hold it in our hands. (Source:

Why this matters: Being able to trust others means we are not alone. As social beings we need others to have a sense of belonging, safety and support. This means that reaching out to others can be a great act of self-care. (Source:
