What is A Self-Care Awareness Month
The World Health Organization announced the first self-care awareness month in 2019. The idea of this month is to encourage people to improve their level of self-care.
What is Self-Care?
The World health Organization defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”.
At Simplesavvysmart.com we have a simple and savvy self-care definition. For us self-care is the ability to make ourselves feel better. For example: when we are having a headache, we know that drinking more water, applying warmth or relaxation can improve our state of well-being.
Self-care includes different areas of life: physical, mental, emotional, financial and social. When we feel better, we are stronger and will perform better in all areas of life!
Three Stats that Deserve Attention During Self-Care Awareness Month
- Freedom to make life choices makes us happy.
Why this matters: Freedom means that every day of our life we have the choice to make better decisions for ourselves. Better decisions means more self-care, more strength and thus more happiness. We are not victims of our circumstances. We hold it in our hands. (Source: worldhappiness.report)
- Trusting others makes us happy.
Why this matters: Being able to trust others means we are not alone. As social beings we need others to have a sense of belonging, safety and support. This means that reaching out to others can be a great act of self-care. (Source: worldhappiness.report)
- Giving during self-care awareness month.
Why this matters: “Giving makes us feel happy. A 2008 study by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton and colleagues found that giving money to someone else lifted participants’ happiness more than spending it on themselves.” This means that when self-care is focused on making yourself feeling better it can also be very beneficial for others.
