happy couple moving

Let’s face it: moving homes are one of the hardest household tasks. The emotional stress of moving can be overwhelming. Knowledge is the key to avoid chaos and have less stress moving.

It is our mission to provide you with ideas that help you build resilience and strength to handle life’s challenges more successfully.

These tips will make your move simple. We asked expert relocation experts and professional organizers to share their secret tips.

Less Stress Moving Tip 1: Take Care Of Your Needs

Ask yourself what really matters to you in this process? Having little responsibility? Having no or hardly any work? Keeping an overview? Making sure what your needs are helps you to define your goals! Here is why.

In March Fay was told she and her family had to relocate to another state. That meant selling the house, changing schools and getting familiar with a new surrounding.  Fay had never liked change. So no surprise that she started to get nightmares straight away.

Luckily she had picked up the habit of having a pen and a piece of paper beside her bed. When she woke up, full of sweat and fear, she started making a list with all possible worst scenarios. Here are the first five topics that she put on her list:

  • Boxes are not fully packed on the moving day
  • Her little son disappeared on the moving day
  • Her husband trying to find his work clothes in the boxes
  • Having forgotten to empty the freezer
  • TV breaking during the move

The next morning Fay started to proactively manage her list: She hired a professional organizer to pack and set a deadline three days before the moving day. A babysitter was hired for her son . Special moving box for her husband’s work clothes and packing material for all electronics were ordered. In addition, being a proactive person, Fay had created a joined list with all family members with important moving items and topics.

When she and her family finally had to leave their home, everything was ready and Fay had time to cope with the little unexpected things. Her entire family was pretty happy..

Being proactive can help reduce stress.

Less Stress Moving Tip 2: Get Ready To Say Goodbye

Getting mentally ready is the first huge step. You need to make sure that you are truly willing to move on. If something holds you back, look at it. It is normal to be sad. Life is divided into different stages and moving houses is often the end of a certain stage.

Less Stress Moving Tip 3: Start Planning Early

The best moving advice is to start early. Planning is the next step after getting mentally ready. Define your goals and set priorities. Checklists can be the gate to heaven. They help us to stay organized and on top. Assign tasks to each week. Moving companies can be very busy.  Meet a few till you make a final pick. Make arrangements for transportation to rent a truck or ask a friend.

The more estimates you have for moving-related services, the more chances you have to save some money.

Less Stress Moving Tip 4: Make a Moving Folder

Having all important moving documents together makes life much easier. Checklists, contracts, new orders, utility cancellations, confirmations for moving telephone and internet services.

Less Stress Moving Tip 5: Ask For Help

Get an overview of what kind of help you need: packing, moving, handyman, babysitter, pet sitter, food delivery and cleaning are some of them.

Less Stress Moving Tip 6: Declutter

Start getting rid of all the things you haven’t used in over a year. Clearing out unnecessary items will give you a good feeling. If you need an idea what to do with that stuff, donating can be very joyful. Also local churches or welfare organizations are very happy about your contributions. Craigslist is another alternative that even can help financing your move.

Less Stress Moving Tip 7: Find Storage

Finding storage can be a challenge. Friends, family members or professional storage units can be a great solution. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing the right location for your belongings. Do you need an AC or heating? Is the storage accessible? Is it protected from rats, mice and other pests?

Less Stress Moving Tip 8: Plan The Perfect Moving Day

Try to define criteria for a “perfect” moving day. Here are some points you might want to take into consideration: Traffic, availability of helpers, weather conditions. The  day needs to feel good to you. Make sure to call everyone involved ahead of time to confirm their presence.

Also check if there are any rules that need to be taken into consideration like quiet hours. As a matter of courtesy you might want to inform your neighbors. Before your final leave, make sure your place is clean, the trash is out and you know where to drop the key.

Schedule your move for the middle of the month or the middle of the week to cut costs. It’s cheaper to move then! If you’re planning a DIY move, you’ll want to look into the cost of renting a moving truck.

Keep a snack bin available during moving and unpacking. Load it up with water, protein bars, chips, or whatever you need to stay fueled up during your move.

If you’re moving with a dog, put their food and water bowl in the same room as where you put it in the old place. The more consistent you are with your dog’s routine, the less likely they are to be anxious.

Less Stress Moving Tip 9: Make a Professional Packing Plan

Would you like to find out how to pack for a move? Packing is a science for itself. We therefore created a separate article which you can find here.

Less Stress Moving Tip 10: Make A List For Formalities

I love to keep a separate list for all formalities. For example: changing your driver’s license,  schedule disconnect times or transfer  for phone, internet,  TV services, utilities (gas, water, electricity). Also, let your insurance, bank and others know you are moving. Make sure you get the post office to send your mail to your new address.

You might want to take pictures of valuable items and documents in case they might get lost.

Update your address for all your accounts, utilities, and subscriptions several weeks before moving day.

Less Stress Moving Tip 11: Plan The Clean

Try to schedule a cleaning service before you move into your new house. A new start is more pleasant when putting your belongings into clean closets. Most places need to be left clean. It is easier to let someone else do this job and move on to your new stage of life.

Less Stress Moving Tip 12: Keep An Eye On Your Food

It is easier not having to move your food. Try to start using supplies ahead of time. Keep in mind to eat your frozen goods. Try to stop buying groceries a week before you leave. Don’t pack blankets or beach towels; use them as pads and save on boxes. Wrap and tape blankets around artwork and lamp bases. And stack and pack lampshades; they often take a beating in a move. Remove each shade; stack them small to large, then put them together in one box to ensure that they arrive intact.

Planning if your  furniture will fit, in case you take it, should be one the first steps. Are there any new items you need to purchase and that will have a delivery time?

When moving you should plan where you want all the boxes to go. Do you want them in each room or maybe in the garage instead?

Also keep in mind that you will need a box with things for the first night.

Less Stress Moving Tip 13: Check Moving Planning Apps

To simplify your move try the Moving Organizer Pro App. This is especially helpful for detailed orientated people who love keeping track of the content of their boxes.
